GARDIAn - Under Development

Diabetes

GARDIAn is an innovative e-portal that assembles and analyses data relevant to the management of diabetes. It is intended for both the patient with diabetes and the healthcare profession team supporting them. The solution will aggregate data that is generated either by the patient, such as blood glucose measurements, insulin usage, and lifestyle data relating to diet and exercise.Accessible via smart phones and the internet and linkable to external monitors and applications, the solution sets to define a new standard in supported self-management of diabetes.

The philosophy behind GARDIAn includes recognition that diabetes is a complex health problem that requires careful long-term and time-intensive management, through a co-ordinated and holistic approach with effective partnership between the diabetic and their supporting team of healthcare professionals; GPs, diabetologists, podiatrists, nurses, expert patients and support groups. Ensuring personal engagement is key so GARDIAn motivates diabetics by exposing any mismatch between agreed targets and their current status and communicating the individual’s risks of long term complications.

The project is a collaboration between WISDEM (The Warwickshire Institute for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism), Somaxa and the Institute for Digital Healthcare at Warwick International Digital Laboratory.

Improving patient-clinician engagement is a key aim, in addition to supporting a greater understanding of factors affecting compliance, improving therapy effectiveness through better lifestyle management.
