Somaxa’s founders, Julie Barnes and Chris Hodkinson have over 30 years experience of the industry and bring a unique mix of expertise in domain knowledge and technology application.

Julie Barnes and Chris Hodkinson are the founders of Somaxa and its two principal consultants. They also hold part time positions as CEO and COO respectively of Abcodia, a biomarker validation company and are honorary contractors at the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.
Julie Barnes, PhD
Julie
holds a first class honours degree in Pharmacology and a PhD in Neuroscience
and has over 20 years experience of the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology
industry. At GlaxoSmithKline for 15 years, she built up experience of
early R&D, strategies for early clinical Proof-of-Concept using biomarkers
and imaging methods. Latterly, her role as Head of Neuroscience and Neuropharmacology
in GlaxoWellcome and GlaxoSmithKline organisations led to more than 8
new discovery programs feeding the development pipeline. Julie was Director
and Chief Scientific Officer at BioWisdom, a global healthcare technology
company. In this role, she established and led the professional services
business and commercialised its safety intelligence solution.
Julie sits on several advisory boards, including the External Advisory Group for the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre in Mental Health based at Kings College, London.
In her roles, Julie has built extensive commercial and scientific experience in start-up and early stage businesses.
Chris Hodkinson
Chris has over 25 years of operational experience, has experience of both commercial and technical management and positions in blue chip companies including GlaxoSmithKline, Camelot Group and ICL.
Chris was the Chief Operating Officer at BioWisdom Ltd where he led the technical and scientific development of BioWisdom’s products and solutions for healthcare intelligence. These include, text analytics, specialist genomics search systems, data visualisation and web-based safety intelligence solutions. He was also responsible for all customer projects, IS support and marketing.
Over the years, Chris has built up considerable experience in a range of disciplines include, marketing, software development, project and quality management in highly regulated industries.
